Mitch Savard - 1961 Type 143 Calgary, Alberta

Mitch purchased his '61 in 2001 and was told that it had previously been stored in a quonset for 10 years (sounds kinda familiar :).
The car looked to be in fairly good shape (I remember seeing it at the Three Hills cruise that year) but as with most projects needed alot of work. Rust in the headlight buckets, heater channels, fenders around the arches, around the air vents in the front, etc. Mitch began stripping the car down in 2002. Four years later the car is nearing completion, as you can see below it will all have been worth it.
Engine is a 1914cc Turbo charged, EFI run with a distributor less ignition (SDS from Calgary). Built by Concept1. Estimated power is 240hp at 15lbs of boost. As I type this I believe that the engine should be in the car. Engine is backed up by a IRS Rancho Performance Street trans with aluminum side cover, narrowed the trailing arms by 34mm each (Bruce in BC), narrowed Bus Axles to fit. Four wheel disc brakes (CB Performance), rotors drilled out for Chev 5 bolt pattern, custom DOT approved steal braided brake lines. Kafer Cup aluminum braces in the back for stability. Berg 4 speed quick shifter. Adjustable spring plates. Polly urethane bushings wherever possible.
3"
narrowed and adjustable front beam from Franklins VW Werks in Seattle with a
narrowed front sway bar from Air Speed in BC and CB Performance dropped
spindles.
A man named Peter worked on the body for a year. Then it went to Mark Idt in Carstairs. He worked on the body again, then laid on the silver base coat, Candy Apple with lots of flake and then clear. Something like 17 layers or more total! It took Mark an entire day of painting from morning to night.
